A Ugandan psychiatrist elected president of the World Medical Association by fifty national medical associations — the first woman and the first African to hold it.

Margaret Mungherera was a Ugandan psychiatrist who served as president of the Uganda Medical Association and then as president of the World Medical Association, elected by its fifty member national associations — the first woman and the first African in the post.

She worked extensively on the mental health of survivors of war and torture in Uganda and the wider region. She died in 2017.
