She qualified in 1962 — the first woman to practise medicine anywhere in East or Central Africa — and spent her career building public health at Makerere.
Josephine Nambooze began practising in 1962 as the first woman doctor in Uganda, and the first in East and Central Africa.
She went on to a long career in public health and is an emeritus professor at the Makerere University School of Public Health. Her qualification came eight years after Sarah Nyendwoha Ntiro became the region's first woman university graduate; between them they opened the professions to Ugandan women.
