He won the Olympic marathon in London in 2012 — Uganda's first Olympic gold in forty years — and took the world title the following summer, holding both at once.
Stephen Kiprotich is from Kapchorwa, and trained for years in Kenya among runners who were better known and better funded than he was.
At the London Olympics in 2012 he went past the two Kenyan favourites, Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang, with about six kilometres left and won by more than half a minute. It was Uganda's first Olympic gold medal since John Akii-Bua in 1972 and only the country's second ever, and he ran the last stretch of the Mall with the flag.
He then won the world championship marathon in Moscow in August 2013, which made him one of a very small group of runners to hold the Olympic and world marathon titles at the same time. He was given a hero's reception at home and a national holiday in his district, and has since put money into schools and running in Kapchorwa.
