She took a degree at Oxford in 1954, the first woman graduate anywhere in East or Central Africa, then spent her life on the education of girls.
Sarah Nyendwoha Ntiro was the first woman university graduate in East and Central Africa, taking a BA in history at Oxford in 1954.
After four years teaching at Gayaza she became the second Black woman on the Uganda Legislative Council, serving from 1958 to 1961. She was among the founders of the Ugandan women's movement, and served eight years as YWCA vice-president for Africa from 1971.
