Got affirmative action for women into Ugandan universities

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Uganda Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

One of the first women in Uganda's National Assembly in 1960, and the person credited with initiating the affirmative action scheme that opened Makerere and every other public university to far more women.

Joyce Mpanga was among the first women elected to the Uganda National Assembly, in 1960, and held a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States.

She is credited with initiating the affirmative action policy for admitting women students at Makerere University, later extended across Uganda's public universities — a measure that changed the composition of the country's graduate class.
