Why they are here
Forty-five young converts, Catholic and Anglican, executed at Namugongo in the 1880s. Their shrine now draws one of the largest annual pilgrimages in Africa.
The Uganda Martyrs were twenty-two Catholic and twenty-three Anglican converts in the kingdom of Buganda, executed between January 1885 and January 1887.
Charles Lwanga and Kizito are among the best remembered. Namugongo, where most died, is now a major pilgrimage site.
